Opera Nights, Hunedoara Castle, second edition

At his second edition, "Opera Nights" Festival, held at Corvinilor Castle from Hunadoara, brought to Transylvania public three famous titles: "Rigoletto" by Giuseppe Verdi, "Barber of Seville"" by Gioachino Rossini and "Carmina Burana" by Carl Orff.

The audience was not left waiting or begged and filled the castle`s of John Hunyadi courtyard, showing that the abscence of a theater opera in the area is just an unfortunate economic situation and not just one of disgust. (The closest theaters of opera from Hunedoara are Timisoara Opera House and The Opera from Cluj-Napoca, at 2-3 hours away, Opera Theatre in Craiova and Brasov each other 4 hours away, which means no theater is accessible o Hunedoara people). But to the performances, not only people from the area were present (Hunedoara, Deva, Simeria, Deva), but also spectators who came from Bucharest or Craiova just to be take part to the event.

The Theatre of Opera and Ballet "Oleg Danovski " from Constanta, led by Mrs. Daniela Vladescu was the one who bore the brunt of the shows. And he did it very well, with heart and consciousness, trying and succeeding to get the most of each performance and providing the best to the public. For example, the interpretation of certain roles could have been made by the same singer - Stefan Iordache Ignat or Basalic could also sing on Saturday, and Sunday – but it was wanted different distributions and the public to enjoy the opportunity to listen to both baritones.

A special thought for Robert Nagy. He might have been excited, though he had successfully interpreted before the role of the Duke of Mantua in Bucharest and beyond. This is because, firstly, Robert Nagy played... in his hometown, Hunedoara! It must have been a delight, but also a sweet- burden - to perform in front of his friends and relatives from his city, but also in front of the simple citizens of Hunedoara.

Regarding negative sides, I think the lack of translating texts was an important minus, especially given that Hunedoara is not an "opera" city and the public, with few exceptions, does not always understand what is happening on stage, especially if the public does not speak italian language.

Another part which I think was wrong... Carmina Burana! A hard show, more accessible to opera loversm which lasted less than expected. Those who came the last day of the show only has every reason... not to come another time to a show of the festival (in fact, there were persons who left during the show...), because, although the interpretation was exceptional, the show is not prepared to attract unsuspecting public and it is not popular also. Maybe if it was followed by several other famous choirs impression, last evening would have been different.

Altogether, the Festival "Opera Night" Hunedoara was a success and we can only wish... seeing again next year also!
