Opera lovers are in for a treat with the return of Rigoletto in the by-now classic staging by Gilbert Deflo with magnificent scenery by Ezio Frigerio. This undisputed masterpiece of Italian melodrama finds its loftiest expression thanks to the presence of great performers such as Leo Nucci and Vittorio Grigolo, as well as the rising star Nadine Sierra. Also continuing are the performances of The Triumph of Time and Truth, which marks the beginning of an ambitious project: the creation within the La Scala Orchestra of an ensemble dedicated to historically informed productions, with the goal of staging a Baroque opera every Season. George Frideric Handel’s Oratorio represents the dialogue between Beauty, Pleasure, Time and Truth with music that reaches the pinnacle of virtuosity and emotion. In addition, there is an eagerly awaited Premiere: Plácido Domingo will return to La Scala with a new production of I due Foscari, directed by Alvis Hermanis and conducted by Michele Mariotti. The opera is based on the story of Doge Francesco Foscari and his son Jacopo, and is set in the mid-16th century in Venice, where Hermanis has stayed to study the history of the Foscari family. After its success last Season, Nacho Duato’s The Nutcracker is back to unite respect for tradition with the choreographer’s modern vision. A stylish, early 20th-century world is the backdrop to a timeless tale, related with simplicity and freshness. Throughout the month there will be a series of unmissable concerts for music lovers of all ages; as well as the appointments of Invitation to La Scala for young people and over-65s and the Great Performances for Children, the Symphony Season concert conducted by Bernard Haitink, Waltraud Meier’s singing recital, and the two concerts by La Scala Philharmonic Orchestra. Lastly, Teatro alla Scala is celebrating George Prêtre’s 50 years of activity at La Scala with a tribute to the renowned conductor.
