Premiere of Das Rheingold at Opernhaus Dsseldorf Eagerly awaited far beyond the Rhine, the premiere of Das Rheingold will take place on Friday, 23rd June, at Opernhaus Dsseldorf. 27 years after its last new production, the Deutsche Oper am Rhein stages Richard Wagners four part opera cycle Der Ring des Nibelungen under the direction of Dietrich W. Hilsdorf.
For Axel Kober this new production of Richard Wagners Ring des Nibelungen fulfils a dream: the Deutsche Oper am Rheins Music Director, who has conducted regularly at the Bayreuth Festival since 2013 will produce this opus magnum with both orchestras - the Dsseldorfer Symphoniker and the Duisburger Philharmoniker - and different casts of singers on the stages of both Opernhaus Dsseldorf and Theater Duisburg by the summer of 2019 and thus continue the Deutsche Oper am Rheins great Wagner tradition.
The Director Dietrich W. Hilsdorf, who was engaged by General Director Christoph Meyer along with Dieter Richter (stage design) and Renate Schmitzer (costumes) for the new production, regards this production of the four-part opera cycle as an open-ended process: What is important to us is to conceive each piece independently and to allow the links across the whole of the Ring to emerge from this. Das Rheingold, in which all the conflicts of the tetralogy are established, can be regarded as a collage made up of images of the 19th century bourgeoisie, whose idyllic lives are interrupted by economic and social crises."
Das Rheingold in Dsseldorf and Duisburg (Premiere on 4th November 2017) offers exciting opportunities to experience distinguished visiting soloists and established Wagnerians from the Deutsche Oper am Rheins ensemble. In Dsseldorf Simon Neal, recently seen here to great acclaim as Telramund (Lohengrin) and Mandryka (Arabella), makes his debut as Wotan. In Norbert Ernst the Bayreuth Festival and Vienna State Operas Loge returns to his first operatic home. The internationally successful baritone Michael Kraus makes his debut as Alberich. All the other roles are sung by soloists from our own ensemble; Renée Morloc appears as Fricka, Sylvia Hamvasi as Freia and Susan Maclean as Erda. Torben Jrgens and Ovidiu Purcel are Donner and Froh. Bogdan Taloş and Thorsten Grmbel play the giants Fasolt and Fafner, Alberichs brother Mime is sung by Cornel Frey. Anke Krabbe, Maria Kataeva and Ramona Zaharia appear as the Rhine maidens.
