An artistic commission under the supervision of Mr Carlos Cebro, Artistic Director of the Competition and President of the Jury, has been in charge of the selection. This year, a change has been made regarding the age of the contestants: they must be between 17 and 28 years old. The jury deemed appropriate to accept two 17 year-old contestants. In addition, there will be 7 Spanish contestants, 3 of which are Catalan. The names of the accepted contestants for the 65th Maria Canals International Music Competition can be found in the following link.
This year, 240 young talents applied to participate in the competition, 40 more than last year, an all-time record. These pianists come from 33 different countries and are aged between 17 and 28. Korea will be the most represented country followed by Japan, China and Russia. The registered contestants live mainly in Germany, United States and Great Britain.
Between March 23rd and April 4th Barcelona once again will be at the centre stage of piano practice, bringing together some of the best young pianists from all over the world. The members of our prestigious jury, presided over by Carlos Cebro (Uruguay/France), Artistic Director of the Competition, are disclosed at the same time as the accepted contestants, in line with the strict standards set by the Competition. The members of this year`s jury will be: Albert Attenelle (Spain), Tomas Böckheler (Germany), Ewa Osinska (Poland), Pavel Nersessian (Russia), Sunghoon Simon Hwang (South Korea), Danielle Laval (France), Mladen Tcholitch (Serbia/France) and Begońa Uriarte (Spain/Germany). No pupil or relative of a member of the jury has been allowed to register for the competition.
In addition, the Maria Canals Barcelona International Music Competition calls upon all families with a piano at home who would like to offer their pianos for the young contestants to study and rehearse, at agreed times. It`s a great way to take part in one of the most important cultural events in the city and hear how a professional pianist plays the home piano. The competition is divided into two eliminatory rounds, a semi-final and a final with orchestra. All rounds will be held at the Palau de la Música Catalana, the prestigious concert hall where the competition has its headquarters. Altogether, a total of 25 paid recitals and concerts with the most important orchestras in Spain in the most renowned auditoriums. The Jesús Serra Foundation makes these concerts with orchestra possible, and Yamaha supports the whole competition.
The contestants who are eliminated in the successive rounds are able to participate in the OFF Competition, which is the educational, social and informative program of the Maria Canals Association, containing a certain number of initiatives throughout the year beyond the competition held in March. The OFF fosters access to music and amateur practice for adults and children, in both formal and non-formal education, and wishes to convey the idea that practicing and enjoying music is essential for everyone`s personal development.
The Maria Canals International Piano Competition is the dean of music competitions in Spain. It was founded in 1954, and it has been held on a yearly basis ever since. The Competition is a member of the World Federation of International Music Competitions since 1958 (the only Catalan member), and a member of the Alink-Argerich Foundation. In 2018, coinciding with its 64th edition, the Maria Canals Competition hosted the I World Conference of Piano Competitions at the Palau de la Música Catalana. |
