For 2019 Opera Festival, Arena di Verona has Bizet`s "Carmen" into the schedule. A little bit surprising, it was a different version that the one by a few years ago, which was 100 procent classical. The new one had different elements - not quite modern, but different - and a few classical related with or maybe from the old version.

First of all, the scene was a huge market with old merchendise. Everywhere it was some old wood, pack boxes, tables, chairs. Most of it, the chairs created quite an impresion when they were left on the stage. They created an image of crowdness without anybody being there. There were also old lorries with rusty board, a fence, everything was necessary to create an crowded neighbourhood hatefull market.

That impression - which is a good thing - was kept in the second part, but was changed with one close in the third when the burglers were crossing the mountains. The last one pointed a different view because the action was in an elite place, the bulls arena. The outside of it was a long moveable fence and the inside was on the back of the scene on the Verona Arena stones! Kind of everywhere you can hear the spectators from backstage, here you can see "the ultras" clapping and encouraging the toreador.

Carmen was Ksenia Dudnikova and he completed the role even she had different colors for clothes than the traditional ones. Her voice was clear and heardable even in a big space as Verona Arena.

Don Jose, Karen Gardeazabal, was not so heartbreaking looking, but he "compensate" with his voice and acting. Specialy in the last part he gave a tremendous impression that he is psihicaly ill, in this way becoming a little bit forgivable for killing his old love.

Escamillo was kind of the same style, not so heartbreaking looking, but good voice. He was interpreted by Alberto Gazale. Dancairo was Nicolo Ceriani, Mercedes Mariangela Marini, all of them where exactly after the roles.

"Carmen" is still on this summer until 4th of September at Verona Atena. She was killed at the end of the performance, but she keeps on getting alive every time when she is scheduled. :-)
