New Dresden production of "La traviata"

Dresden, 16 September 2022. After her two acclaimed Dresden productions of »The Golden Dragon«
and »The Bald Soprano«, Barbora Horáková returns to the Semperoper this season with a new staging
of Verdi’s »La traviata«. On 2 October 2022, the Czech director will transform the Semperoper stage
into a scintillating world inspired by the pleasure palaces and elegant French salons of the 19th century, where the premiere audience can enjoy Verdi’s masterpiece about love and death performed under the baton of Leonardo Sini.

Following a lukewarm reception at the 1853 premiere, Giuseppe Verdi’s »La traviata« went on to become one of the most popular stage works by this great reformer of Italian opera and also one of the
most highly regarded pieces in the entire operatic canon. To this day, the poignant melodrama based
on the novel »La dame aux Camélias« by Alexandre Dumas fils continues to captivate opera audiences
around the world with its dramatic and memorable score featuring world-famous bel canto arias.

The premiere of this new Dresden staging will see Adela Zaharia make her Semperoper debut in the
title role of the mortally ill courtesan Violetta Valéry. Currently, the Romanian soprano is thrilling European opera lovers with her celebrated interpretations of Italian repertoire. She will be joined on the
premiere evening by other star guests including the Armenian tenor Liparit Avetisyan, one of today’s
leading tenors in Italian repertoire, as the unhappy lover Alfredo, and the Russian baritone Alexey Markov as his father Giorgio Germont.
