4623 Some of the greatest international voices like male soprano Samuel Mariño, countertenor Nicolò Balducci, baritone Mauro Borgioni, sopranos Francesca Lombardi Mazzulli and Giulia Bolcato, and with the extraordinary participation of Cecilia Bartoli - the world’s most famous opera singer - in what is one of her rare Italian appearances. The Italian debut of French director Olivier Fredj, celebrated all over Europe for his recent Bastarda at La Monnaie in Brussels, who will be directing Orfeo; and the Festival debut of young director Roberto Catalano, who will be staging Polittico Monteverdiano. Great experts of the Baroque repertoire like Ottavio Dantone, Antonio Greco, Francesco Corti, Fabio Biondi, Giordano Antonelli, William Christie, Federico Maria Sardelli, Gianluca Capuano, at the helm of ensambles like the Accademia Bizantina, Il Pomo D’Oro, Concerto de’ Cavalieri, Europa Galante, Musica Antiqua Latina, Les Arts Florissants, Modo Antiquo, Les Musiciens du Prince, the Orchestra Monteverdi Festival – Cremona Antiqua. These are just some of the protagonists of the 41st Edition of the Monteverdi Festival, the richest edition ever, held in Cremona from 14 to 23 June.

Italy boasts the paternity of numerous inventions that have contributed to changing the social, civil, cultural, scientific, and anthropologic history of society. Cremona has been, in many ways, one of its most dynamic centers. Music is the field in which our town has been the protagonist of the most audacious revolution. Claudio Monteverdi was born here in 1567. A revolutionary and a visionary genius, the courageous father of opera and melodrama, Monteverdi kickstarted the musical and theatre genre that over the centuries has most of all filled humanity with a passion, while making Italy and the Italian language famous worldwide. For this reason, UNESCO has recently declared Italian opera singing as humanity’s intangible cultural heritage.

Monteverdi, the father of opera

Over thirty events, with opera productions, concerts, meetings, educational residences, and crossover experiences, spanning various means of artistic expression. Two new productions of operas by Monteverdi: the Festival is to open with Orfeo, the first masterpiece in the history of melodrama, here conducted by Francesco Corti and staged by Olivier Fredj, performed by the winners of the CMC, the International Baroque singing competition, Cavalli Monteverdi Competition; and Polittico Monteverdiano, a project celebrating 400 years since the first performance of Il Combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda, presenting, on a single evening and for the first time in modern era, the Madrigals in representative style - including the above-mentioned Combattimento - directed by Roberto Catalano, and conducted at the harpsichord by Antonio Greco, who is also the Festival’s Principal Conductor.

Seven unmissable concerts in churches, theatres, and in the town’s most beautiful historical palaces, with internationally renowned Baroque artists like male soprano Samuel Mariño, violinist Fabio Biondi at the helm of his prestigious Europa Galante Orchestra, but also the famous Modo Antiquo conducted by Federico Maria Sardelli, and the ensemble Musica Antiqua Latina, led by Giordano Antonelli. One of the most anticipated events is with Les Arts Florissants, the celebrated ensemble created and conducted by William Christie. And we will also have the Basel-based Voces Suaves, amongst the most renowned Baroque and Renaissance vocal ensembles.

Last but not least, we will have the Cremona Antiqua - Orchestra of the Monteverdi Festival, created in 2021 as a resident orchestra for the Monteverdi Festival which includes some of the most active Italian and international musicians on this repertoire, led by Antonio Greco. This Festival will also be full of surprises, like the concert-lesson with John Eliot Gardiner as special guest, and the closing gala with Gianluca Capuano conducting Les Musiciens du Prince, with the special participation of Cecilia Bartoli, international opera star, among the most refined interpreters of the Baroque repertoire, for the first time in Cremona.

As one of the events leading to the opening of the Festival, we will have the grandiose Vespro della Beata Vergine - milestone in Monteverdi’s production – in the San Marcellino Church on Wednesday 29 May, at 9pm. The concert is free of charge, as an homage from the Festival to the town and the people of Cremona, who preserve the heritage of their most famous fellow citizen. Protagonists of the event are the Accademia Bizantina, conducted by Ottavio Dantone, the Coro del Centro di Musica Antica Ghislieri from Pavia, and renowned international soloists.

For ten days Cremona will see his most symbolic areas fill up with inclusive and original events like “MonteverdiDappertutto”, bringing the music of the Divine Claudio to the workers of local health structures, “MontevertiNight” with evening and night musical events mixing dance, music, improvisation and theatre performances. There will also be workshops specifically dedicated to the youth, thanks to the antique music residence “MonteverdiAcademy”.

The Monteverdi Festival, where tradition and innovation have always coexisted, projects our musical heritage to the future. It is now reaching its 41st edition to celebrate Monteverdi, his operas, his extraordinary music, his legacy, his Cremona: capital of the entire Baroque musical world and cradle of opera singing. Where it all started and where everything takes new life.
