Michieletto`s staging of Les contes d`Hoffmann lands in London [ From category News ] [ Article date: 2024-10-14 ] [ From city Londra ] [ Country Anglia ]   Following its success in Sydney and Venice, Jaques Offenbach`s Les Contes d`Hoffman staged by Damiano Michieletto, finally makes it to the Royal Ballet & Opera in London, where it should have made its debut in 2020, when the pandemic halted its production. The five-acts opera on a libretto by Jules Barbier will be on stage from 7 November to 1° December 2024. «The journey of these Contes d`Hoffmann – says Michieletto – should have started right from London in 2020. The project was then stopped by Covid. But that was just the first time, as the following staging, in Sydney in 2022, was also stalled by the pandemic. Australia`s main Opera House was later able to stage it in 2023, and the show later made it to Europe, specifically to Venice, one year ago. It`s now the turn of the Royal Ballet & Opera, where the world premiere was supposed to take place. I`m happy that the show is finally making it to London, but I`m also a little sad that I won`t be able to be there: the changes of plans caused by the pandemic over the past few years have made it so that I am now busy filming my first movie, another project that has been postponed several times. I`m sending my best wishes to the theater and to all the performers for this production of Les Contes d`Hoffmann, of which I am particularly fond of». The Italian stage director is returning to Covent Garden for the fifth time over the past nine years: in 2015 he made his debut with Guillaume Tell, followed by the diptych of Cavalleria Rusticana and Pagliacci, – the latter receiving the Olivier Award – he then returned in 2019 with Don Pasquale, and in April 2024 he staged Carmen. «I imagined Les Contes d`Hoffmann as a journey through time, – adds the director – a look into the different ages of the protagonist: the child, the boy, the already disillusioned young man, all represented by the female protagonists Olympia, Antonia, and Giulietta. Stella will end the story by destroying Hoffmann`s illusions, somehow as if she was the devil herself. He will thus find himself alone, with all the symbols of his fantasy past world, all representing his poetic universe». Antonello Manacorda will be conducting the opera. The role of Hoffmann will be covered alternatively by tenors Juan Diego Flórez (7, 10, 12, 25, 28 November and 1 December) and Leonardo Caimi (15, 18, 21 November) ; the other main protagonists on stage are Alex Esposito playing the four demon characters (Lindorf, Coppélius, Dr. Miracle, and Dapertutto) ; Olga Pudova, Ermonela Jaho, and Marina Costa-Jackson are respectively Olympia, Antonia, and Giulietta, the three women loved by the poet; Julie Boulianne is Nicklausse; Vincent Ordonneau is Spalanzani; and Christine Rice is the poet`s Muse and Antonia`s mother. To complete the cast are Christophe Mortagne (Andrès/Cochenille, Frantz/Pitichinaccio), Alastair Miles (Crespel), Jeremy White (Luther), Grisha Martirosyan (Hermann/Schlémil), Ryan Vaughan Davies (Nathanaël). Working alongside Michieletto is his traditional creative team, formed by stage designer Paolo Fantin, costume designer Carla Teti, lighting designer Alessandro Carletti, with the addition of Chiara Vecchi for the choreographies. Cinema audiences can experience the imaginative and colourful staging on 15 January 2025 with an Encore performance on 19 January 2025.
